Reasons to Recycle Computers:
Reason #1: Illinois Bans
Electronics from Landfills-- As of Jan. 1, 2012, it is illegal to throw
most electronic devices in the trash. The new law also requires recycling
programs to be free to consumers, paid for by electronics manufacturers. See
Educational Flier
Reason #2: PCRR rebuilds computers and places them in
schools and other non-profit organizations.
Frequently Asked Questions:
1. We are collecting the computers for PCRR (www.PCRR.com).
PCRR is taking the old computers, wiping clean the hard drives and
refurbishing the electronics. PCRR refurbishes as much equipment as possible
which is the best for the environment.
2. Data Security:
PCRR wipes all hard drives clean that it receives. PCRR has written digital
data destruction software called VAIRIFi, a division
of PCRR. The VAIRIFi
software meets the NIST 800-88 standards by a single pass wipe process. The VAIRIFi system using the Secure Erase code on Hard drives that have that code for digital data
destruction, otherwise VAIRIFi uses a wipe
process. The NIST document requires
“Verification of the process should be conducted personnel without a stake in
any part of the process”. If the hard
drive cannot be wiped clean it will be physically destroyed.
3.
Are any materials shipped overseas?
Nothing
is shipped overseas. All equipment that is not reusable by us will be
responsibly recycled. We have R2 Certification. R2 requires e-recyclers to assure that more toxic
material streams are managed safely and responsibly by downstream vendors-all
the way to final disposition. It also prohibits e-recyclers and their
downstream vendors from exporting these more toxic materials to countries that
have enacted laws making their import illegal. For more
information you can go to www.r2solutions.org
4.
What kind of
sorting has to be performed? None. Just bring your computers and electronic
items to the parking lot at Trinity Methodist Church on Saturday, June 22,
2013. For a list of accepted materials, Click Here
5.
What kind of monitors do you take: CRTs, Flat-screens and is
there any charge?
We accept all
of these at no charge. For a list of accepted materials, Click Here
6.
Is there any way of knowing who is the beneficiary of this
collection effort? While we work mostly
with schools and non-profits we do not work exclusively with schools and non-profits.
There is no way to determine where the systems will end up exactly. We
will refurbish as much as possible and responsibly recycle anything that we
cannot refurbish. Our goal is to put your recycled equipment to the best
possible use. If the hard drive
cannot be wiped it will be physically destroyed.
